Problem Statement
The idea for Chronos emerged from Reine’s personal experience. Observing both the elderly and foster children, she recognized both experience profound isolation. Statistics from the Government of Canada indicate that approximately one in four seniors in Canada report feeling lonely, while foster children often suffer from instability and a lack of consistent emotional support. Approximately 30% of foster youth exhibit symptoms of PTSD. These insights highlighted the need for a structured program that leverages the strengths and experiences of both groups to create a mutually beneficial environment.

Chronos tackles the dual issues of social isolation among the elderly and the absence of stable mentorship for foster children. Loneliness in seniors is linked to severe health outcomes, including increased mortality, depression, and cognitive decline. Simultaneously, foster children face educational and social challenges, with many lacking access to mentors who can help them navigate these challenges more effectively.
Urgency
The global aging trend and ongoing economic and social impacts necessitate immediate action. The aging population in Canada is expected to represent 23% of the population by 2030. Addressing these issues now is critical to prevent a future health crisis and ensure that foster children have the support they need to succeed.

-
Loneliness and social isolation increase the risk of premature death by up to 50%, which is comparable to other well-established risk factors such as obesity and smoking.
-
Social isolation and loneliness contribute significantly to healthcare costs, with estimates from the U.S. suggesting billions in additional expenses due to doctor visits, hospitalizations, and long-term care needs.
-
Foster children without proper mentorship are at higher risk of dropping out of school, with about 50% not completing high school by age 18. This lack of support can lead to long-term economic and social challenges.
